DIY Home Photo Shoot

In December, I gave birth to baby number 2 and because of pandemic restrictions where I live, I wasn’t able to hire a photographer to do a newborn photo shoot.

I decided to do it myself, from the comfort of my living room, using a point and shoot camera and my iPhone.

This is what the photos look like:

Like what you see? Here’s what you need:

1) A well lit room and/or a ring light

Lighting is the trick to all good photos. If you want your shots to look pro, take your time with this step. Light your set properly and do a few test photos until you get it right.

2) Props and little creativity

In my case I did a newborn shoot and tried to replicate the look of my first child’s newborn photoshoot. I bought the swaddle, blankets, headbands even the fake hardwood floor off of amazon (everything is tagged in my amazon store). I also did a google search for newborn photos and how photographers swaddle a baby (this my friends is much harder than I thought). The Starbucks cup I made by cutting a short Starbucks cup into a smaller size and I used tape to bind it together. Once I figured out my looks, I set up my makeshift studio.

3) Angles

Test the angles. I tried a few different poses with my newborn and moved the camera around to find the best angles. That’s all!

Tip: For newborns, keep them comfortable and cooperative with a heat lamp.
